There are people on this forum who actually talk like nothing's ever been better here.

Even with NYC's recent spike in crime, it's still one of the safest big cities in the US.

Same goes with Seattle.

Not so much with Chicago.

Well yes. Boston is on pace to have its fewest murders in generations. As of right now, 13 people have been murdered, which puts the city on pace for 26.

Sure, every murder is bad. Every stabbing is bad. Every crime is bad.

But you have to see that statistically, the city is in a better place than most major American cities.

Stats are just one side of the coin. Reality is the city could have had 100 murders, but if those were all gangbangers offing each other in the projects then few would care. Yuppies and tourists getting attacked on the Common in broad daylight, that totally changes perception.

Perception may change, but not reality.

Murder isn't the only measure of disorder and the fact that murders happen to be low right now speaks well to the Boston Police Department and its community partnerships, but it doesn't mean everything is wonderful with the city. Some of the same people who say things are great also say the police department sucks.

Is that a record? I don't recall the number of shootings in Boston in any one night to ever be that high in the bad, old days.

Apparently if nobody was killed everything's hunky dory. When white yuppies become a sizeable chunk of crime victims, some people will sing a different tune.
