Why is this low lifer only fined $1000 for trying to run someone over w/her car when she has a 10 page criminal record? https://www.wcvb.com/article/boston-...s-him/44743739

The case disposition is pending. Bail is not a fine, it seeks to ensure court appearance.

bail ...should be set at like $100K for this repeat offender! Why even give these low lifers the chance to get out on bail?!

Bail is based on the likelihood someone will appear not to be used as a punishment. The 8th Amendment to the Constitution prohibits excessive bail. No way of knowing how the Judge came to that amount without knowing all the facts. That said, people default on bail all the time and sometimes it's set too low. It's not a science. The way you hold someone in MA without bail is through a Dangerousness Hearing.

Wouldn't the facts that she tried to run someone over plus her 10 page rap sheet be enough justification for no bail and worthy of a dangerousness hearing? Clearly this person is going to continue to be a repeat offender and the way to stop that is incarceration.

Not necessarily. She may have a 10 page criminal history but she may have appeared for all her past court dates. If that were the case there would be no basis to believe she would not appear for this one. The reason they have hearings is to flesh out all these issues. Dangerousness hearing is the means to deny bail based on danger and is only applicable to certain charges. Bail itself is only to guarantee appearance. If every person accused of committing some type of dangerous offense were held without bail we wouldn't have jails to hold them and it would go against the presumption of innocence. I'm going to guess this woman has a mental illness or addiction problem. As a side note, depending on a person's resources and ability to raise bail, even a low bail can keep them behind bars.

Our DA is describing it as "extraordinarily dangerous" which it clearly is. She's clearly a menace and has a violent history of assaults.
