He had one guy that I recall, someone who just got out of the service. The reason he told me what he made was because he was making fun of me when I was sweeping up some mess one of the contractor's made and he noticed my dustpan had a hole in it. It was because my puppy just chewed it and he told me he was sure I could afford a new one given that he made a million dollars last year and my husband must make at least that.

If it's only himself and one journeyman assisting, I'm a bit skeptical that's he's pulling in a million dollars. I imagine you can only do so many jobs flying solo before you become overwhelmed, backlogged and start to let clients down.

I have no idea if he was telling me the truth but my niece's husband does almost all commercial work, probably puts in 12 hour days and works most Saturdays. They own 4 houses.

50 * 6 * 12 = 3600 hours/year

To make $1m a year he'd be charging in the $300/hr range and likely charging for travel at the same rate. I don't think those rates are typical.

Less intelligent?
I'm not so sure people memorizing something from a book and recording it at a later date constitutes as intelligence ?
I know several people that went to that very school who are not lacking intelligence and are also millionaires.
I also know a lot of "intelligent" scholars who have 1/4 mil $ debt and are making 80k a year.

Yes. Lots of intelligent young people who are just not good students and/or just not interested in college tracks of study. Now, you don't even need to acquire and use good critical thinking skills to get a bachelors. Independent thinking seems to be frowned upon.

IMHO 12 years school for everybody is a waste of time and resources.
Change it to 9 or 10 years.
Allow kids with good grades who have potential to get into college to finish 12 grades.
Others should finish vocational schools so they know trades and can earn money. Vocational schools of course should offer regular classes so students will have enough courses to graduate from high schools.
This is how it’s done in many countries.

(I would also shorten number of years and start algebra, geometry, physics, chemistry etc earlier than in high school)

It's this very narrative in our society that has chased people away from very noble trades work. being Seen as less than someone who is a cog in a corporate machine. When Covid happened I think a lot of people came to the realization that we could live fairly easily without an investment banker, Insurance salesman etc.. but the need for electricians, plumbers, car mechanics and the sort became apparent very quickly.

We need to stop the ignorance of "less intelligent" people go into the trades. It's a gross stereotype.
