Hi all and thanks for taking the time to read! I am a student and just moved to Boston MA! I am supposed to move into my apartment tomorrow! I am an international student and while I was abroad I had a hard time registering to start new services for electricity and gas as I didn't have a US phone number! I arrived in Boston 2 days ago and called to start my services - they have requested ID documents which I sent to them and mentioned that my account will be ready in about a week's time! i did mentionI am taking over paying the service from 1st September! Now I am worried whether there will be interruptions until they open my account? Any help / insight is appreciated

It's very unlikely that they will shut off the utilities, as they usually leave it running until the next tenant takes it over. The turnover is so high it would be unusual for the unit to be vacant for an extended period of time, and it would probably be more costly to dispatch a technician to every apartment to disconnect in between tenants than to just leave it running. This would be especially true since you already started a new account so they know someone's going in there. The only times I've known them to shut off services is when someone racks up a big bill and defaults on payment. Even then, they would probably use the collections route against the former tenant if the person had already moved out, rather than shut off the service.

I agree with bostongymjunkie. The danger of shut off is very very low, they will simply start charges at the start of your lease date. If that is not figured out immediately (ID docs or whatever other reason), they will still go back and charge you after that is resolved.

For piece of mind, you can call them to make sure.

Best of luck and welcome to Boston.
