Yeah, I mean I wasn't around in the 50's, but I do recall remnants of the saturday hot dogs and beans thing and my mother talked about. But I don't think it was an inherently Boston thing. I've heard of that tradition throughout New England.

They sorted the beans on Friday and let them soak overnight then bake them all day Saturday for supper on Saturday with franks and brown bread. B&M Baked Beans in the glass jar are OK.

I remember touring an assisted living facility for my parents and was told that a new food director decided to mix things up. He changed out the franks and beans on Saturday for other foods thinking they could do better than that. Well the residents rose up within a month demanding their franks and beans be returned to the Saturday night menu.
