CAR rental places that DONT charge for 24 y/o driver (Cambridge: car insurance, transfer)

Why not use a zipcar when you're in town?

you can reserve a car, pick the car up in areas close to Cambridge , Brookline,Newton, Bosotn, Somerville, Quincy, etc. and then drop it off whenever you say you'll have it back.

in most cases its $9.25 a hour to rent the car, $69 a day

this is to drive to hartford. was hoping to do something that was $20-25 a day, but damn corporate america wants to charge me blindly for being under 25.

Take a Greyhound bus instead, or get a friend to drive you and treat them to a good meal as a thank you. What's in Hartford?

Statistically, there is a very good reason for that surcharge. And one day, when you finally start owning your own cars, you'll see those rental fees including the surcharge isn't such a bad deal. If you only need a car once in a while, a rental or a zipcar is a very smart expenditure. Do the math on buying a new car, registering and insuring it. If you live in a city, add in the cost of parking.

My partner owns his car, and we pay insurance on it. I think the surcharge should be refunded if nothing happens to the car. It would be a way to reward "good behavior" as opposed to blindly punishing all good drivers.
Hartford has the other law school he may attend.

Well you'll be 25 soon... I wonder if the car rental companies would prefer not to rent at all to the under 25 crowd. I know that I wouldn't want to just going by the car accident statistics. And it's not about poor driving but other factors like lack of driving experience and aggression caused by raging hormones. And as an out of towner renting a car, you will not know the city well that you are driving in, so that is another risk factor to add to the formula. Otherwise, no company wants to have the hassle of dealing with a segment of the population that has a high probability of causing damage to their property. And the more insurance claims they have to file, the higher their future insurance premiums. Everything is just a numbers game.

But have you checked with all the car rental places in regards to their under 25 policy? There might be some variation in fees. Will your partner be going to Hartford with you? If he rents the car, maybe it will be cheaper as his car insurance will transfer over to the rental.

What about just going around Hartford by public transportation or taxi? It's not that big a city.

Another suggestion if you are looking at schools, is to ask the school if they have student volunteers that might be willing to spend the day showing you the area in their vehicle.

I figure you're talking about UConn. The law school is only about a mile and a half from the bus/Amtrak station, a little past the Mark Twain House, and it's in a very attractive, practically suburban part of town. I don't know if/where you're staying, but you could take a cab there pretty easily. It's more or less a straight shot west. Of course this option makes it harder to explore any of the rest of Hartford if you want to.

Generally I'd be wary of going around Hartford by public transportation if you're not familiar with the city. There are some pretty rough areas and public trans., mostly buses, can be slow going. I don't know the system, but given that UConn is only a block off from Farmington Av and Asylum St, two major thoroughfares, I imagine there is a bus that goes straight from Union Station to a corner very near the school. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a bus on Asylum St near there.

I have a student offering us room for the two nights.
Taking the gotobus would be $60 total for us, which isn't bad.
I just don't know if we are going to be "stuck" in hartford, which sounds like we'd need transportation to get around that city.

We know we'd need a car moreso for our move if we choose hartford, much less so for boston.

we've never been to hartford, just boston... hartford is a cheaper (but possibly NOT equal) alternative.

I am over 25, but the driver is not. I do not think that makes a difference.
