Searching for areas to move to. Hubby would like to be on Melbourne Beach, I would prefer the mainland. If I "won" (LOL), how can he do a "day trip" to the beach. In other words, I see that there are many homes that are ON the beach in Melbourne Beach, and many people belong to "community associations" that have beach access (via HOA fees). How would a mainlander go to the beach?

And silly question, but are there Lifeguards on the beach at all? Hubby is a senior who thinks he is 20 years old......

Plenty of places to park at the beach and beach access pretty much everywhere. You have to decide if you want to have to drive every time you go to the beach. There are plenty of places that are actually beachside that are just far enough away that you'll find yourself driving after the first few trips. Either get close enough that you can comfortably walk or resign yourself to the fact that you'll be driving. Not a lot of lifeguards in Brevard County except for a few parks. I'm not sure if there are any in Mel Beach.

There are public beaches throughout most of Florida. You will need to look for one, there are several in Brevard with a parking lot and shower-type areas you can use. Not too sure about lifeguards in that area but there will be much fewer than in more populated areas like Miami.

A day trip to the beach is possible from anywhere in Brevard; you will be 45 minutes away at the most. You guys will have to decide how much of a priority it is for you. I love the beach but having to drive does take a lot of the enjoyment out at least for me. Even though I'm only an hour's drive away I still rent an apartment right on the beach for a month every year. Being able to step out the door and go for a walk on the sand at any time of day is a much different experience than having to plan it out as a "trip".

Good luck with wherever you end up, it sounds like you will enjoy it here.

May I please ask how you got a one-month rental? Was that a private deal or did you find an actual short-term rental listing somewhere?

Plenty of beachfront condos allow one month rentals and there are lots of houses close to the beach doing short term rentals. AirBnB or VRBO have hundreds of listings beachside Brevard.

I have been to Florida many times, mostly the Orlando area and am well acquainted with Melbourne Beach. Reaching the beach for a day trip is rather easy in Florida, unless the person is obssessed with a specific beach, say the person lives in Orlando and specifically wants to visit South Beach everytime he wants beach time. Beaches such as Melbourne Beach, Cocoa Beach, etc are within an hour or so from Orlando, perfectly doable as a day trip. In fact, take offs from NASA are visible from Orlando and they are done in Cape Canaveral on the coast. Now places like Melbourne Beach are even closer then when I first went to Florida in the 1990's, since the road has been widen to make it safer for higher speeds and more traffic.

Basically, almost the entire coast of Florida, whether it's facing the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico, is full of beaches. Often times in reality there is one unbroken beach that goes on very far along the coast and each section has a different name, but it's the same beach. Moreover, I think anywhere in Florida is no more than 2 hours away from either the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico, regardless how far inland does a person live. If reaching the beach takes longer and there is no major traffic along the way, then you're probably not in Florida.

I agree with this SO MUCH!

You can be beachside without being beachFRONT. Beachfront is more expensive all the way around, but you can find condos and homes that are a block or more away from the beach, but it's still walkable. We have a condo on the western side of A1A in Cocoa Beach, and aside from waiting for the light to cross the 4 lanes, it's an easy walk to the beach access.

Wait a minute? the original post is in Brevard County forum, but just noticed the topic.....

How to do "the beach" if you live on the mainland (Miami: apartment)

Is the OP in Miami? This post is in the wrong board?
