Main Street has been the traditional dividing line between East and West Buffalo going back to Buffalo's beginnings. Early streets split at Main Street: East/West Chippewa, East/West Tupper, and East/West North (originally the northern boundary of the city as incorporated in 1832). Some streets that crossed Main Street were as West Huron/Huron, West Genessee/Genessee, West Swan/Swan. Some streets on the west side of Main Street ended at Main: Church, Niagara, Court. Some streets on the east side of Main Street began at Main Street: Goodell, Burton, Carlton, High, Goodrich. Virginia was one of the few early streets in Buffalo that had the same name on both sides of Main Street.
Later, as the city expanded, these street naming conventions continued, most notably with East/West Utica, East/West Ferry, East/West Delevan.
