What is the public transport system like in Amherst? Is it possible to get to and from work on foot or by local transport? I know it would probably deend on what area you live in, right? But generally speaking?
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, I'm just a little clueless about it.
Also, is it difficult to get from Amherst to NYC? Is it a long trip? I checked it out and it seems to be a six hour train journey but I'm not convinced I have this right. A friend told me it was a two hour drive.

no, it takes 45 minutes to an hour on flight its around 5-6 hours on car
It might be a 2 hour drive to NYC from Amherts Mass but Amherst NY your looking at closer to 7 hours. The train takes longer because it stops along the way. Bus service in Amherst does exist but its very spotty because almost everyone owns a car.

Your questions are not silly.
First, where do you live in Amherst? You need to look up the NFTA website. There are buses on Niagara Falls Blvd, on Main, and many crisscross the town -- if only for work times. The 30 Kenmore goes down Wehrle to the airport. There is a new route running on Transit which services the Erie County north to South Community colleges; you are supposed to be able to flag it down. Amherst is a huge town, so it all matters where you are and when you want to use the bus.
Going from Amherst to NY City is about 50 min fly time; it is about 6-10 hours drive time ( route/time of day/weather); it is 7-9 hours on Amtrak ( 2 stations: Depew and Exchange St) and there are buses. I have seen here that megabus will go from the downtown or airport to Penn station.
You need to do some research on the NFTA site. Travel to NY City, use the other sites ( JetBlue is usually cheapest air fare)

If you are basically asking "Do I need a car in Amherst?" the answer is yes. I read in another thread that you live in Brooklyn. Unlike Brooklyn most things are not in walking distance and public transportation may be possible for 9-5 commuting, but definitely not evenings and weekends. (Note: I moved from Buffalo to Brooklyn 2.5 years ago).
As BuffaloTransplant said, it all depends on where you are. Amherst is quintessentially suburban and car-centric. The only place I could imagine not having a car in Amherst would be in the middle of the Village of Willamsville, close to Main street, but even that would be difficult.
If you want to be car-less it would be easier to live in the city of Buffalo and commute to Amherst via public transport. North Buffalo around Hertel Avenue somewhat resembles the Marine Park section of Brooklyn and Elmwood Ave. is like a scaled-back 3rd or 4th Avenue in Bay Ridge. Both are walkable neighborhoods with more frequent bus service.
As for the trip to NYC - I've done it many times by car and fastest ever door-to-door time I've had to Brooklyn is 7 hours. 6-10 hours is a correct assessment because it all depends on your final destination in NYC, traffic, weather, and bridge/tunnel delays. Air (Jet Blue) is the most convenient method and isn't that much more expensive than Amtrak, but you need to figure in the extra expense of transportation to/from from JFK, unlike Penn Station where you can more easily connect to many subway lines.

I don't live there yet, I'm moving in April. I'm just trying to get as much information on the area as possible because I really have no idea about this area of New York.

I had a feeling that I would need a car in Buffalo. It's good to know that 9-5 commuting may be possible though. I lived in Brooklyn for a little while and when I'm in New York, that's where I mostly stay so I guess I was just trying to get a comparasion between the two areas in terms of local transport.
Judging by what you say, it seems like living in Buffalo city and commuting to Amherst might be the best option for me.
