Are there any nice family-friendly public beaches around the Burlington area

Sure, north beach is great! It's quite family-friendly and it has a nice sandy beach. You could also try the sandbar, which is further north up by grand isle.

Shelburne beach is the most beautiful around, IMHO, but it's only open to Shelburne residents and their guests when the lifeguards are there. If you go before and after certain hours, you can get in. It's worth a look just for the view and the play structure! Charlotte beach is gorgeous, too, but it's quite rocky. The older kids like it the best because there are docks there for jumping.

There is a nice small beach in Malletts Bay in Colchester across from Bayside Park. It's not nearly as crowded as North Beach. It's open to everyone and if you want there is a brand new park for the kids as well as a skate park, tennis courts and basketball courts just across at Bayside Park. There is a big covered structure/ gazebo for a picnic. Bring a camera, great views.

North Beach is the one that immediately comes to mind, Sandbar can be very buggy and is shallow too far out. We never swam around Burlington itself because of too many pollutants and not enough beach.

The water temp is warm on most waters in Vermont only about 3' to 5' down at best. Below that, it can get cold real fast. The best beach near Vermont is Ft. Lauderdale, only an airplane trip away.

Umm...
North Beach is the closest thing you'll get in Burlington to a NASCAR race.
Saying that place is infested with rednecks is like saying you might run into a yuppie at Starbucks.
Beer is allowed at North Beach.
Rednecks drink, rednecks fight.
I haven't been there in years, but drunk driving used to be an issue in the campground.
I'm not saying it's a bad place, but "family friendly" isn't the first thing that comes to mind.

I'd take that over weirdos sitting around naked at Willoughby any day.

I had an entirely different experience when I went to North Beach just last week, and when I went before that in June. Lots of families with children and teenagers, no more "rednecks" than any other place.

But if you are so concerned with rednecks, why are you living in VT?

The only reason I am living in Vermont is because I was born here, and don't know anyone anywhere else. Otherwise, as a college educated 20 something, I'd be long gone.
