Hi there. My family and I (Grandma, mama, a 4 month old and a 9 nine year old) are looking or a place near Burlington. We're looking for something less city and more "mountain town", but within an hour or less to Burlingon. Saranac, for example, would be perfect if it weren't for that pesky lake in the way.

Something with a community vibe, little or no chains/strip malls. Hiking, bike friendly and good public schools are a bonus.

Any input is wonderfully appreciated.

I'd check out Underhill and Jericho to the northwest of Burlington and Bristol to the south.

Stowe. I can sense the vibes. Jericho would NOT fit.

Thanks guys, checked out Underhill and Jericho, they were nice but not quite right. A little sparse, but Stowe is looking cool any other ideas?

We have a place in Stowe, and if I was wanting to live closer to Burlington, I would check out Bristol...love that town. Also, the Mad River Valley/Waitsfield should definitely be on your list, very community oriented, tons of outdoor activities/skiing/etc, and def cheaper than Stowe.

Stowe is pretty amazing (if you can afford it), but you are at least 45 mins from Burlington depending where you are. If you live on the Waterbury side you are close to both, or even Duxbury. I have always heard good thing about Waitsfield but don't know it very well. Also agree Brandon is great, Neshobe and Lincoln Peak Vineyards, Cafe Provence, and they are really do a lot to bring back the downtown. Middlebury (again if you can afford it) is an impressive town. The more affordable version is vergennes, and is closer to Burlington - I love Vergennes. Some excellent restaurants - Black sheep bistro, 3 squares, and others that aren't coming to mind... if you give more info I am sure we can help narrow it down
