Is it rural? Do people have farms? Is it suburban? Is there a grocery store? I have never been to vt and we are considering a job that is in georgia/milton. I did a search for georgia on this board and nothing came up. Any thoughtts on the area? We would like to stay close to work and not live in burlington.

Milton is cute, it's very local and extremely different from Burlington. Burlington is mostly transplants while Milton has a lot of locals. It seems to be fairly neighborly, but some people can be a little rough around the edges. I hear that property is fairly cheap up there. I'm not too crazy about the town itself, because it's not quaint or walkable really, but there are definitely plenty of shops. Milton even has some big-box type stores, like a McDonalds, etc. and a small shopping plaza, pet store, etc. It definitely does not feel very rural or isolated to me. The landscape is mostly farmland and scrubby forest/swamp. To the north of Milton is a pretty drive on route 7 along the lake.

Whether or not you would consider Milton rural depends on what you are comparing it to. I would not call it suburban at all. To me it is a dumpy town with not much to offer. Housing is less expensive to some degree than Burlington but there are some newer developments that may be a little higher than the older homes in town.

Yes there is a grocery store. There are a few tiny strip malls. You will find the basics like a drug store, home supply, post office, a few gift shops, ice cream shops, dr.'s offices, etc. But for clothing, furniture, electronics and the bigger purchases you'll have to go into Burlington (and surrounding areas).

There are many empty storefronts and a large new ice arena went bankrupt this year and closed over night.

Georgia is a bedroom community to Burlington. Very commutable to Milton and while not much in the way of shops it is much nicer than Milton. From Georgia you can also shop in St. Alban's which has a lot more to offer than Milton for shopping.

There are farms in Milton and some very rural areas.

Good luck with the job. Where are you moving from?

Georgia is a rural town (Do a Google Map search to see). There is not much in town. I work with several people who live in Georgia and they do most of their shopping in St Albans or hit the COSTCO in Colchester.
Milton does have a bad rap. The schools are not very good, it is rough looking (there are more dumpy used car lots than anywhere I think I have been in Vermont) and the main reason it is more affordable is because of the reasons listed. If I were to settle in the area, Milton would be at the bottom of my list. If you don't have a family and want an affordable place, there are some newer developments outside of town that are very nice. If you have kids, I would avoid Milton for the schools alone. There are much better options in the county.

We have a joke in our house that "all roads lead to Milton". It seems that whenever we take a detour or go off the beaten path in this area we always end up in Milton.

Milton just hasn't been taken over by the same sorts who dominate places like Burlington, Charlotte et al.

Been to Milton once...don't plan on returning. To get a good education for your children - seek elsewhere. South Burlington perhaps.
