Hello,

My boyfriend and I will be relocating to Burlington from NYC this summer. He was accepted at UVM for a PHD in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. I currently work in the Marketing department at NBCUniversal and have just started looking for job openings in Burlington. I noticed there are some small marketing agencies as well as larger headquarters including Ben & Jerry's and Green Mountain Coffee. We are also trying to figure out where to live. I would prefer to be close to downtown and maybe on campus. I found grad housing called Centennial Court which looks nice. Does anyone have any advice on Marketing job opportunities along with apartment rentals in the area?

Thanks!

Hi...I just recently moved to the Burlington area myself. As for other companies to consider, you should check out Seventh Generation, Dealer.com, Burton, and mywebgrocer.com.

For apartment rentals, you should try Craigslist, burlingtonrent.com, and rentinvt.com.

Good luck!

You may have already moved, but I wanted to give you advice for housing (I agree with the above poster to check out Dealer.com and Seventh Gen, etc. -- you shouldn't have a hard time finding work coming from a big city, it scored me points for some reason when I moved here from Chicago)

Anyway, Burlington is... interesting... in that the cost of living is very high but salaries are below average. The vacancy rate within Burlington is something like 1% which puts a lot of power in the hands of landlords, and it's hard to find something even decent here that isn't way over-priced. Also, with UVM students occupying a huge segment of the population, you'll find it very obvious the way that housing is very old and run-down within the city limits. That being said, although I hate my apartment in Burlington I am very grateful that I can walk to work AND the downtown area...and you might be luckier than me at finding a nice place! There are surrounding areas, too, that are very nice (as close as Winooski or further like Shelburne or Essex Junction) that would require you to drive in (or bus). Those would offer you more "bang for your buck" in the way of housing costs, IMO.

Good luck on your move!

Just to add to what kmski posted, living in or near downtown can be nice, but it has many drawbacks as well. I would live outside the city. I'm not talking an hour or even a half hour. You can be within 15 minutes of the downtown and have cheaper/nicer housing, access to more affordable groceries, etc. This would require you to have a car in most cases, but this also has a positive side. You will not be to truly experience the state without a car. Public transportation is very limited to almost non-existent for most of the state. You will be stuck to where you live.
