Hi All,

I am moving to Burlington, VT this fall in order to accept a faculty position at a nearby college/university. I am currently looking at house rentals in Charlotte and Vergennes. I am primarily looking at these towns because my family owns two dogs! And it is impossible to find modern and nice (keywords), pet-friendly rentals in Burlington. Anyhow, how long does it realistically take to travel to Burlington from these towns? Furthermore, how much time would snow add to my commute on Route 7? Btw if this sounds like a bad idea, please feel free to express your thoughts candidly.

Oh, about 6 hours ought to do it. No really, except for a huge snowfall, you'll be there in an extra 20 minutes.

Ha. Funny! Okay, 20 minutes sounds reasonable. Thanks, square peg. I really appreciate your input.

Have you looked at rentals in South Burlington and Shelburne?

That's great! Should have you a little closer to Burlington. We went through the same thing looking for a rental in S Burlington that would allow dogs. Luckily we had a couple of months to look around, so we were able to find something, but it wasn't necessarily easily.

If you do end up in Charlotte or Vergennes the commute is fine. The vast majority of people who live there commute north for work. As far as snow...as someone above mentioned give yourself an extra 20 minutes. This past winter there were maybe 5 days where the roads were really bad. Also you have a few other options besides Route 7 (Mt. Philo Road, Spear Street etc).

It's certainly nice to know that someone else understands the pet dilemma. I had an easier time renting something in San Francisco than Burlington! But it seems totally worth it. I really enjoyed my job visit this past spring and cannot wait to move in.

Ah. Good to know! I am living in Shelburne for now. But definitely, after arriving, I will consider Charlotte or Vergennes after getting acquainted with the area. Thanks so much for your help!

Traffic congestion during rush hour on Rt 7 would be more of a concern timewise in my view than dicey roads.
