Do you consider Burlington a safe city? I'm looking for a city where kids (tweens and up) can walk around by themselves (within reason) and be safe. Is this Burlington?

Yes, it's all relative of course, but having lived in 3 major cities, 3 smaller cities, and one city called a town in 7 states it is the safest I've ever lived in outside of the rinky dink town in KY (and I didn't get a great feel on that one).

Thank you so much for the quick response! My oldest is approaching "tweenhood" and my family is getting ready to make a major move. I really like the idea of living in a place where the kids could have a certain amount of freedom to wander and still be safe.

Burlington is a fairly safe city, but you are better off with one of the outside towns when it comes to having kids. The schools in towns like Essex, South Burlington and Colchester are much better hands down. My middle son is a senior at both Colchester High and Burlington (Tech Center). He takes classes at both schools and even his opinion of his classes at Burlington is not very high.
