IBM announced a big layoff. One of the only divisions to lose money this quarter was the Essex plant. We will see in the coming days if there is a layoff in Essex.

Newest thought is a layoff of under 500 on Tuesday, more in a few months, possible sale of the plant.

It's almost cruel to just postpone the inevitable. I just wish they would do it and get it over with. If the plant gets shut down and the state follows through with it's mass layoffs the situation will get very ugly here.

Are there specific state jobs being slated for down sizing / layoffs?

The VT plant has been a very large employer, but in the long term strategy of IBM (future), this plant is viewed as increasingly irrelevant and is just there for the legacy of one of the executives who lived up there. It is very similar to the Kodak scenario in Rochester...a plant/s whose time has passed.
