If you want to be surrounded by hippies, go to Burlington bars. If you don't care for hippies, stay away.
Then this says quite a bit about the other restaurants in Burlington. If Sweetwaters is the worst, then the others must be phenomenal! Looks like the OP is doing himself a favor staying there.

Hippies, no hippies, whatever - as long as a place has good beer, good food and isn't a chain I'm good to go. Interesting to hear Sweetwaters has a bad local rep.

Depends which crowd you ask. I know plenty of locals who like Sweetwaters. Not "hippies," whatever that means. I haven't been there. It gets mixed reviews online:

Sweetwaters - Burlington, VT

I worked in an upscale Burlington restaurant for years and Sweetwaters took the most crap from the cooks of all the Burlington restaurants.
I've been there once in my life, don't really remember it (I was probably 12 at the time).
My advice for Burlington restaurants... There are far better options than Sweetwaters.

Follow up on our trip: For lunch we stopped at Long Trail Ale and sat outside (unfortunately they have a large tent up so even though it was sunny we were in the shade). Good beer and ok food, nicely crowded, fun atmosphere.

Dinner - we ate at Trattoria Delia. Would love to know how they got that cabin inside of the building? Place was hoping, neat atmosphere, good service. Food was solid, had better italian in Providence but I am not complaining at all.

Breakfast - Penny Cluse. Cute place, very good service, creative breakfast menu and reasonably priced. Nice.

Burlington itself - great little city overall. The downtown church street area is a tad too isolated and sterile for my likes (almost fanuiel hall-esque) but fun. Thanks for the rec's everyone.
