I sell things online that require a deposit and then the rest is paid when it is shipped. So after several years of doing this, I get this question: "Do I have to pay the balance now or after I get it" Come on now, when have you ever paid for something after you have taken it home or after you got it in the mail? What's a nice way to word that?
The nice way is simply to have your business terms stated in your merchandise purchase agreement in your website. "how to buy" would be a good faq page.
Then it's pretty straightforward to answer these questions ... you simply refer your customer to the company policy. No personality need to be involved ... it's "company policy", and your customer can see it posted online. End of story, no need to make it any more difficult than that.
Be empathetic, without thinking of them as "dumb". Some people are just a lil nervous. Then put yorself in their shoes, not knowing as much about the product as the the person working there.

It used to be done a lot. It was called "COD" or "cash on delivery." It has been largely abandoned by modern business, but your customers may be old and remember having bought this way. On the other hand, they may be from other countries and how things work here in America may be a learning experience.
Just tell the customer the truth that you do not offer C.O.D. i any aprt. If you want tell themthat its your resposiblity to get it to them and they can contest the chrages if they do not get it with credit card.IOts noit strnage because mnay sotre require a deposit to order then the payment when delivered.
