My buddy owns a Aluminum window and door manufacturing business. The business has good profit margins and does $12 million in annual sales. He bought the business 10 years ago.
He's 41y/o and doesn't have any children. He rents a condo.
I don't see anything wrong with his situation. He said, long term he wants to build a custom loft home. (nice goal).
What' really odd is people give him "grief" because he doesn't own a home. I know his net worth is between $5-$8 million. People seem to think owning a home is "end all be all". As if, you're not an adult unless you won a home or something.
He said people treat him as if they are "better" than he is because he doesn't own a home. I don't find that hard to believe. Some people DO think having home makes you an adult. I call it: House Snobbery.

As the owner of that type of business he probably doesn't have the time or interest in maintaining a home. Having owned a business for 16 years while owning a home, I can understand that. Owning a big house with a nice sized yard was important to us because of 3 kids at the time, but with the work hours and then having to mow, trim, repair and the rest it didn't leave much in the way of leisure time. I don't know why anyone would care whether he owns a home or not, unless they are a potential customer and perhaps find it odd that he doesn't use his own products.

One thing he did mention is what you've pointed out-he stated, he does not have the time to care for a home and when he does, he likes to spend it doing other enjoyable things, like flying. He's into aviation.
Here's what I say when some busybody tries to tell me I need to be, own, or do something because somebody else is being, owning, or doing it: "I don't owe you an explanation, and I don't need your approval, but thanks for sharing." Then I just get on with my happy, successful life.
I agree. A roof over his head is all that matters. The only exception is a cardboard box roof, lol.
Tell your friend kerakera is proud of him for not buying (no pun intended) unto the 'homeownership hype.'
