My buddy owns a Aluminum window and door manufacturing business. The business has good profit margins and does $12 million in annual sales. He bought the business 10 years ago.

He's 41y/o and doesn't have any children. He rents a condo.

I don't see anything wrong with his situation. He said, long term he wants to build a custom loft home. (nice goal).

What' really odd is people give him "grief" because he doesn't own a home. I know his net worth is between $5-$8 million. People seem to think owning a home is "end all be all". As if, you're not an adult unless you won a home or something.

He said people treat him as if they are "better" than he is because he doesn't own a home. I don't find that hard to believe. Some people DO think having home makes you an adult. I call it: House Snobbery.

As the owner of that type of business he probably doesn't have the time or interest in maintaining a home. Having owned a business for 16 years while owning a home, I can understand that. Owning a big house with a nice sized yard was important to us because of 3 kids at the time, but with the work hours and then having to mow, trim, repair and the rest it didn't leave much in the way of leisure time. I don't know why anyone would care whether he owns a home or not, unless they are a potential customer and perhaps find it odd that he doesn't use his own products.

One thing he did mention is what you've pointed out-he stated, he does not have the time to care for a home and when he does, he likes to spend it doing other enjoyable things, like flying. He's into aviation.

i have no desire at all to own a home. i have owned homes and hate the chores, expenses and worrys that go with them.

i have done far better renting and buying other assets instead.

if our rent surpasses the costs of an equivalent co-op we may buy one but a house is not even a thought.

Here's what I say when some busybody tries to tell me I need to be, own, or do something because somebody else is being, owning, or doing it: "I don't owe you an explanation, and I don't need your approval, but thanks for sharing." Then I just get on with my happy, successful life.

If you don't mind me asking, are you over age 40?

This guy is way ahead of all the 'homeowners' who are giving him grief.

Oh, and the fact that they have so much to say about this guy's personal life and finances proves he's doing something right!

I agree. A roof over his head is all that matters. The only exception is a cardboard box roof, lol.

Tell your friend kerakera is proud of him for not buying (no pun intended) unto the 'homeownership hype.'
