I just did some research into Santa Clara County, where I knew someone who had to clean the county fairgrounds in order to keep getting her cash assistance about 5 years ago. In Santa Clara County, anyway, the cash assistance is no longer considered a loan, unless you are overpaid or you get SSI.

But, you can only have a car worth $4500, and only have $500 in assets.

So, if you meet their criteria, and you can live on $300/month or so, you may not have to pay it back.

Financial Assistance for Adults - Social Services Agency - County of Santa Clara

This web page also has a chart that shows how much money you'd get.

That's interesting. I suppose it cost more to supervise all the welfare recipients' work programs than the labor was worth.

EDIT: I just read the section that says if you're employable they will assign you to "activities." Not sure if that still means wearing an orange vest and picking up garbage on the freeways or not.

Might mean being forced to read and post on C-D all day. Or even worse: Moderate!

It's the 2015 version of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Since you seem to be particularly math challenged today, let me help you.

Let's say that there are 100 "illegals". And 3% of them are employed picking crops, that would be 3 illegal crop pickers, right?

But if there are only 4 jobs available total then 75% of those jobs would be held by "illegals" and 25% would be held by "someone other than an illegal"

Get it now?

Guess oldglory doesn't want to understand the math he asked to have clarified.
