Generally speaking, what is quicker, 5 or 101 for North South-South North Travel? From La how long does it take for you to get to the Bay Area and visa versa? I usually go 5, but sometimes enjoy taking 101 or on rare occasion 1.

I've done this drive many time between SD and the Bay Area. 5 is quite a bit faster, about 7 or 8 hours. 101 takes about 12 hours or so.

101 - slower, scenic drive
5 - just get there

Interstate 5 is much faster but boring; miles and miles of nothingness. 101 is interesting but longer. We sometimes take 99 on the east side of the Central Valley but not if we are going to the Bay Area; 99 is more interesting than the 5. Some day the bullet train will be running parallel to Interstate 5 for part of the way up to San Fransisco.

This. 101 is fun to do a few times in your life, and if you've never done it, you should, but 5 is definitely the way to go if you've got somewhere to be.

My first visit to California, we rented a car and drove up 101 from LA to Oakland (that was the plan, anyway) and was just so sick of it around Big Sur. After stopping at the Bixby Bridge and visiting Julia Pfeiffer State Park, and getting to Monterey, we took Route-68 inland and got the hell off en route to something quicker (and less scenic).

If you went to Big Sur, you weren't on 101, and if you got sick of Big Sur, well, what can one say?

You are thinking of Highway 1 not 101. The Pacific Coast Highway is the most interesting and scenic of any highway in California but treacherous in places. 101 runs parallel to Highway 1 and at times they merge. But mostly 101 is inland once pass Santa Barbara\ Pt Conception.

Ah, you are right. Good looking out.

Sorry to the OP for throwing in another commute option.
