Due to the aging population of the country medicine is one of the few fields where employment has continued to go up despite the recession. If you can find any way to qualify for one of those jobs then it will make your task of finding employment so much easier.

As you know all too well, graduates of foreign medical schools have a tough time finding any employment in the US which taps their training/skill level. Some are employed as nursing assistants, taxi drivers, sales clerks, etc.

You’ll have to be licensed (with appropriate classes and other specific requirements) in order to work in a diagnostic lab:

California Department of Public Health

LFS Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications for Laboratory Facilities and Personnel

Laboratory Field Services provides licening, registration, and certification services for clinical laboratory facilities, blood banks, tissue banks and the testing personnel who perform professional preanalytical, analytical, and post analytical testing services for these facilities. The links below give the reader specific information on a variety of topics.

Another person has suggested Irvine to us also - as a place that is a 'new' development (?) - he suggested that given its location it would be a good place to base ourselves.

San Diego seems like a nice town/city also - so I will look into there as well!

Thanks for the kind words

(ps. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the Gold Coast!, next time you should head to Melbourne!).
Sorry about the delay, I've been away from City-Data lol. Irvine is a nice area and it has a central location. I agree with the person who said it would be a good place to base yourselves considering the things you desire. San Diego and the surrounding area would also be good and you shouldn't have too much trouble finding an entry level position in the hospitality industry there. If you want to splurge, try finding an apt in La Jolla! You also mentioned Anaheim. I haven't spent much time in Anaheim besides going to Disney and dining at a few restaurants. You'd get a lot more responses if you post a similar question in the Los Angeles forum.

It’s good that you are being open to other employment options to get you running. Renaissance ClubSport in Aliso Viejo presently has about ten different job openings. I’m sure there are even more hospitality jobs available in Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Hills, Irvine and other nearby places. Summer job seekers are probably zeroing in on many of them.

Renaissance ClubSport Aliso Viejo | Sports, Fitness, Hotel & Spa | Aliso Viejo, CA

Clubkid Attendant, Esthetician, Floor Coverage Manager, Front Office Agent, Front Office Agent (Overnight), Hotel Sales Manager (SMERF), Line Cook, Massage Therapist, Membership Sales Representative and Nail Technician.

I suspect that competition for a hospitality job is much tougher in San Diego than Orange County, because it’s such a popular destination.

It depends. My cousin went to medical school at McGill University, in Montreal, and had his residency in Toronto. Afterwards, he got a job as a pediatrician in New York, where he still works. I imagine he had to take some sort of licensing exam for New York State, but in any case he did what he needed to do.

Canadian medical school graduates, including your cousin, are the exception. The average foreign medical graduate has a very difficult time getting licensed in the US and has to undergo additional training and certification. It’s a rough road, so that’s why so many turn to other jobs. This is not a matter of opinion, it’s a fact.

He definitely had to take the licensing exam in NY in order to practice in that state. This is required of all MD's, including those who have attended US medical schools. Not to take anything from your cousin, but what he did (taking the licensing exam) was not unusual, it's mandatory in order to practice medicine.

La Jolla is great but extremely expensive. I live about 8 miles away because even with a M.S. degree in a hard science and a good paying job I can't afford to buy in that area. They'll blow through their savings in no time flat if they have to pay La Jolla rent rates. My suggestions as someone born and brought up in San Diego who has lived here off and on for 35 years is for our Australian friends to move a few miles inland where the rents are cheaper and if they would like to go to the beach then simply spend 10-15 minutes driving there. That would cut rent costs in half easily and the weather doesn't change that much over a few miles.

Irvine in Orange County is also a very nice area though just so he knows (they are from another country after all) the population is heavily Asian-American. In all likelihood that won't matter but some people do care so I thought I'd mention it.

I find it a little hard to believe that they've made exceptions for Canadians but not Australians however maybe geographic proximity to the US does have it's advantages after all.

Why is that so hard to believe? This is nothing new, and the US and Canada cooperate in a variety of areas, and across a number of different professions.

Obviously proximity is not the determining factor because graduates of Mexican medical schools face enormous hurdles if they want to practice in the US. Still, international medical graduates consittute about 30% of all primary care doctors in the United States.

Anyway, not to go off topic, I wish the OP luck.
