Oh those Unions are at it again...

Maybe we need a poll for Californians. Where would you rather have the tax dollars you have paid but seem to be missing allotted: 1) Keep those millions of violent criminals about to be released from prison in prison? or 2) Fitted sheets in your hotel room?

From your link:

"The California hotel workers union is pushing a bill that requires all hotel mattresses to have fitted sheets instead of flat sheets. They argue that the heavy lifting required for flat sheets is causing back injuries for workers. The problem is, the regulation comes with a price tag of $30-$50 million dollars charged to the taxpayers, according the California Hotel and Lodging Association."

I have worked in the housekeeping industry and I can tell you that you can make a bed with a flat sheet without LIFTING up the mattress. In fact, if you are lifting up the mattress, you don't have a clue.

That having been said, I think that fitted sheets are a better choice because most housekeepers are so incredibly lazy that they will not bother to MAKE the bed properly with a flat sheet on the bottom. (My personal experience with hotel stays bears this out).

Also, having fitted sheets IS more expensive, because if there is a stain on it, both the top and bottom sheets are thrown into the laundry (if the sheets are folded in sets). This causes more wear and tear on linen and waste of water resources.

I assumed both sheets were laundered regardless.

If you have a "set" made up of a [clean] flat sheet, a [clean] fitted sheet and two pillow cases, 99 times out of 100 if one of the pillow cases or one of the sheets has a stain or tear or is "otherwise" unusable, the housekeeper will throw EVERYTHING into the "dirty linen" bag to be washed. It is just much more expedient than having "odd bits" taking up space and messing up the routine. There is no reason to wash the clean linen, but it happens every day. In fact, I have pulled linen out of "dirty linen" bags that have not yet even been UNFOLDED. But because they were in contact with truly dirty linen in the bag, you have no choice but to re-wash them.

There are hotels already using fitted sheets but they also put in another flat sheet to go under the blanket and bed cover. That flat sheet is also tucked under the mattress as hotel guests like to have their beds neat and tight.

If the housekeepers are injuring themselves from lifting the mattress, they are doing it wrong by lifting it higher than necessary. All that is required is to pull the corner of the mattress high enough for a flat hand to fit in between for tucking in the fitted sheets. It's not like mattresses made of rigid stone. They are flexible enough to bend the corners high without actually lifting the entire mattress off the bed box.

This bill is so stupid in many ways and I cannot believe it is being circulated around for passage.

I prefer the flat sheets. Easier to check the mattress for signs of bed bugs(not that that is 100%).
