I'll be moving to Travis AFB this fall and I was wondering what's the best city to live in that's relatively close to the base. From the people who I have talked to, they recommend Vacaville. What about the cities closer to the bay like Vallejo, or Martinez? What kind of rental house can $1500 get me? And what would the commute from Pinole to Travis be like(I have family there)?

Can't answer most of your questions, but I'd select Vacaville over Fairfield or Vallejo.

Vacaville, Dixon or Davis.

However since you have family in Pinole it might be ok for you. Many more urban issues in Fairfield, Vallejo and Pinole than the cities I mentioned.

I know Davis is a college town. I'm hesitant to that option as I would like to live in a quiet neighborhood and not next to a bunch of college students.

I would look in Dixon, or the rural areas outside of Vacaville. Vacaville has gotten fairly large, and with that has come some problems, mostly with juvenile gangster types. Dixon is small, friendly and semi-rural & probably cheaper than Davis and closer to TAFB. Forget Fairfield, unless you have the money to live in Green Valley, it's not a place you would want to live.

Davis is very expensive... nothing happening in Dixon. Vacaville is supposed to be a notch better than Fairfield. I've heard mixed about Martinez and nobody I know has a single, good thing to say about Vallejo.
