From the traditionalist blog What's Wrong With the World:

"One of the most powerful acts of quiet resistance in 21st century America is simply to love your own place. Hang the television, the internet, the corporate monoculture, the federal behemoth, and the priorities of distant capitols and rediscover your own backyard. Cultivate those regional loyalties and affections without which it is impossible to fulfill the commandment 'love your neighbor'.

Towards that end, things are really heating up in northern California. On October 22 a new organization called "Defend Rural America" hosted an unprecedented panel of eight local sheriffs who proclaimed their loyalty to the people who elected them - and to the Constitution - over and above the destructive encroachments of federal and state governments ..."

Jefferson Rising
Ole Tom Jeff did not think much of Christians. Funny that Christian types would want to name a state for him. Maybe they should consider Falwellia

For some reason, people who speak the loudest about "destructive encroachments of federal and state governments" and their desires "just to be left alone" are often precisely the people who wouldn't last without government handouts. At the federal level, the reddest states are southern states without much in the way of industry or economy and with heavy reliance on DC money (which, in turn, comes from workers in blue states.)

In California, it works the same way. Counties like Siskiyou are not viable economically and would not survive at their present population levels (low as they are), if not for the money from Sacramento and DC. Next door, in Modoc County, there was a story last year: the county, which was heavily dependent on handouts to begin with, also managed to run up a lot of debt, and it needed an emergency $16 million loan from Sacramento to keep it from declaring bankruptcy. (The total population of Modoc County is 9,700.)

The general idea is that they want the government to give them money and then to leave them alone.

It would be interesting to see how (and how long) Jeffersonians can manage as an independent state. They should do fairly well for themselves for about a year or two, as they quickly cut down all the forests still left untouched because of those cursed "environmental regulations". After that, it will be a blood bath.

You coastal liberals flatter yourselves. If you really believed your own lies you would be happy to cut us all loose. Instead, I suspect you'd be the first to oppose any move towards partitioning the state.

As a long-time resident of one of California's "cow counties" I can tell you that the state government presence here is far, far, far out of proportion to the need. And the strings attached to all of this wasted state money are the strings of a hangman's noose. Granted, our local politicians share plenty of blame for lacking the backbone to refuse the "help".

Jefferson would do just fine if allowed to manage its own resources. Good fences make good neighbors.

Jefferson or not, when we cash out to retire, if we stay in this state, we'll probably be heading north.

That sounds good to me after editing!.. I live that (Minus the Internet..) But I am a Socialist and an eclectic Pagan... Sure I am Rural, and find common fundamentalist ground with the Native American, Fundamentalist Christian groups like Amish and Mennonite, with regards to what man has done to our food and the grand distraction of technology..

But that is about where I draw the line...

experience and data show that not to be the case.

I remember when my logging friends were all up in arms over spotted owls. They did not think things through.

"I would ask them, what is the problem with the spotted owl?"

They would reply "they like old growth timber, and if they are there, we can't log"

"Ok" I would reply. "You can't cut old growth timber because there are owls in it, and if there were no owls, then what?"

"Then we would log the hell out of the old growth forest, dag nabbit"

"Yep", my reply, "then what?"

"Whaddyu mean, then what/"

"Well, after you you log the hell out of the old growth forest, there ain't no more old growth forest, right?"

Their reply would come suspiciously, "yeh, so what?"

"Well", I would respond with a gentle smile, "You'd be out of business, just like the owl is doing to you, except, you would have done it to yourselves."

Their response was usually "You dag nabbed hippie commie enviro liberal, what you have to go and use logic on us'ns"

I was up at our old place Sunday, drove by the old mill. A deck of logs, small logs. My daughter said, "Small logs"
I said, "yep, that is all that is left, they make pencils out of those, all the big trees are all cut down, and owls didna' do it."

It's all good, just don't tie it to homophobia, hatred of women, oppression of others, because you're stabbing yourself in the back.
"Wolf reintroduction?" It's a part of god's plan to be done and over with idiots who keep breeding like rats and pollute the earth. Time to stop this.
I believe in the rights of rural america and standing up to corporations and government encroachment from all directions: but if you come after me and try to oppress me, whatever your group is, I'll be the first one to fight you, armed if it takes it and I will have no qualms, as these haters are not human in my book. Live and let live.

Just what is the "State of Jefferson" policy on logging?

*For the record I have been a logger, have Tree farm status, manage our forest land, and buy and buy timber by the semi load... (Yes, I am involved in forestry, so before I move to the west, I need to understand the issues..)

It is my take that you have some new logging companies in Northern California that have some pretty darn good management plans... Without the the environmental pressure, these world class management techniques would have not been implemented... !!

In the Upper Midwest, The whole "little house on the Prairie, Big Woods" "endless" old growth White Pine was stripped at the turn of the 1900's... Much of our forest has not recovered to this day. Climax species are just starting to reestablish... I am thankful the days of rape and pillage are over, and we are entering into an era of conscientious, sustainable forestry management practices that will insure a quality, steady, sustainable harvest for my generation and future generations..

I do not see how getting rid of Government and regulation helps future generations?
