I leave California a couple times every year. But, like a bad penny, I keep coming back.

Not if but when our income becomes fixed (or God forbid, we no longer have the same employment opportunities) we're out of here. Sad thing. This is my home and my wife's adopted home. However we have faced the fact we are only here for work now and not much else.

While I suppose anything is possible, it's hard for me to imagine a scenario in which I would leave California. My friends are here; my family is here. Even if I lost my job, I could survive on my savings, without changing my lifestyle significantly, for about 15 years.

I have only been in California for nine months and while I'd like to stay for a few years, I don't see this becoming a permanent home.

I have several reasons: (1) Nearly all of my family is back east. (2) The cost of living in the metropolitan areas, the areas with the most robust job markets, can be burdensome; it's a challenge for me even though I consider myself frugal. However, if you can handle rent or the mortgage, nearly everything else is far more manageable. (3) I miss Southern (or at least some kind of "heartland") hospitality and I'm sorry to say that Californians aren't exactly "sunny" people. (4) If the legislature is more interested in banning open carry of unloaded rifles than helping the Central Valley get the water back on, then let's just say I've only voted for one Democrat ever and it's likely to stay that way.

I see California as an incredibly beautiful state that is a great stop on the journey of life. Who knows if I'll be here two years or fifteen, but I'm learning more about myself...that I'm more Southern than I thought I was. I may join Capt. Dan and Curmudgeon when it's all said and done, or just move to East Asia if this country continues to go downhill ever quickly (thanks to both parties and political and fiscal irresponsibility).

Although I don't currently live in California, the factor that is keeping me from moving out is cost of living. Back when the economy was better I planned on moving out there, obtaining a job and attending college. I graduated the year of the recession so that was put on hold. When the economy recovers, I may attempt to move out to Cali again and hope that everything works out.

We need a "where would you go" poll to supplement this. I lived in several states, but all along the East Coast and only ever moved for work. I'm not one of those people who can work anywhere, way too specialized a field and not near retirement age.
