Slab City is populated by a wide variety of people, politically I imagine most are to the right of center, since they don't have much money. To characterize the citizens as meth heads or trash etc, would be the same as characterizing all catholics as pedophiles, etc.

Ha ha. This thread is kind of funny. I wonder how many people posting here have ever been to Slab City? I won't pretend to live there, but I have visited a few weeks at a time over several years. You're as likely to find mega motor homes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars out there as you are meth heads. The whole spectrum is there, in winter, anyway. Wander out to the "LOWS" area and you won't see anything depicted in this video. Venture a bit to the east and you'll see lots of it. You won't really get a sense of the place from "Into the Wild" either. The Slab City parts were shot there, alright, but it's depicted as a sort of bohemian haven of enlightened former hippies, but that is only a very small part of what Slab City really is.

Too bad about the Range and the permit thing. if Imperial County wants to get started down that road, it will get very ugly out there very quickly. But last I heard the land was owned by the state, not Imperial County. And the state has chosen to ignore it for many years.

I've never felt threatened there. People pretty much keep to themselves, from what I've seen. Like almost everywhere else, I think it mostly depends on the neighborhood you choose within the city.
