I prefer the local mom & pop shops.

My current local fav:
Gunther's Ice Cream Shop

Or, other brands I like are Alden's, Hagen Daz, B&J's, or the ole standby B&R's

Gellato is good too.
Zia's
Miabella Gelato

If you're in LA, try CoolHaus. They make their own ice cream and always have new flavors. Last time I was there, fruity pebbles was one of their new flavors.

Carnation, when or if you can still find it, from "contented cows." That is, of course, unless Nestle has ruined it. We used to get it home delivered back in them thar olden days.

Handel's, that's probably the best ice cream I ever had. I'm surprised they are out in CA, mainly in OH and PA and a few other states last time I checked.

Dreyer's is much better if you get it fresh at the shop in their headquarters in Oakland.

I have two Handel's within a 10 to 15 minute drive, and one B-R a mere 5 minutes away. You guess which door I never darken.

I have no problem with Dreyer's (Edy's) from the grocery store. Their coffee ice cream is almost as good as Haagen Douche, yet is much more affordable. And their seasonal flavor, Coconut Pineapple, is my version of crack.

As far as supermarket ice cream goes I don't care for the overly rich Ben & Jerry's, Dreyer's, Breyers, Haagen Dazs, et al. They're sickening in their butterfat content and density. Here in the northern part of the state I prefer Crystal and Humboldt Creamery. Its normal ice cream without all the "everything but the kitchen sink thrown in" flavors and double fat and calories of the so called premium brands.

Crystal was the best when I was a kid, they sold Butter Brickle and Dad was delivering milk door to door.

Every once and awhile when I see a doppelganger I wonder? Things that make you go hhhmmmmmm
