I have received one response to the city of Salinas...saying it was high crime, and high minority? So there is no real place "safe" to live in Salinas? How about surrounding areas that might be safe and affordable...please let me know..thanks!

My daughter lives in that area in Seaside. She loves Monterey and Seaside but she says she doesn't go into Salinas, doesn't feel safe there. She also mentions Carmel being nice and she loves the outlet stores in Gilroy. As for the Monterey, Seaside area, says there are cops on every corner and therefore virtually no crime in those areas.

Yeah for the most part thats true. There are some nice areas in that area, basically in the new construction areas.Monterey in extremely nice, sea side from what I hear is higher crime.A lot of these towns around this area is high agricultural and has many generations of Latino immigrants, and through the years gangs have developed. It seems to be the cool thing to do for the Latino youth.

Thumbs down Salinas , a big NO!NO!

I was born and bred in salinas,ca. The town has changed drastically. Very unsafe during evening hours. Make sure your are in before dark. The only nice areas used to be near the North area but that has changed too. You might look out toward the new homes on Constitution Blvd. near San Juan Grade Road. It is more in the outskirts of Salinas but the mall can still be accessed any time and there also shopping center plaza nearby. The reason we moved from there 14 years ago is because some gang member approached my ten year old son on his way from school , what color was he claiming? The gang colors in Salinas are Red and Blue. I was shocked that he was approached in broad daylight! So, I decided that we needed to move . I didn't want my son recruited by any gang. So, good luck on your search.

I was born and raised in Seaside and it's gotten better. The area has been revamped and cleaned out. Basically people with money and realtors, bought up all the property and outpriced a lot of the rifff raff, although there are are still pockets of indidividuals who live with family members and such. It used to be bad 15 yrs ago, a lot of murders, but it's better now. but it's extremely expensive to live. Salinas is dangerous... Don't move there, and if you're not Hispanic, you will be the minority and they will bully your kids, the gangs are bad out there and person even got shot in broad daylight in the mall out there. It's a dangerous place to live. If you have money, I'd recommend, Seaside, Monterey, if you have a lot of money, then go to Carmel, Pacific Grove, and if you're super rich, go to Pebble Beach. But the schools are terrible out there, so be careful, do private schools.
