Born in Monterey and raised in the area for 21 years. Moved to the central valley, then to Santa Barbra. Moved back to central valley.

I did not say all of CA, and the two counties have a large part of not the largest p[art of the population, soooo.. It isn't about sq miles it isn't about forests, or deserts or mountains, or beaches, or whatever, it is about how people become when crowded together.
Don't live like that. Problem solved.

Born in Massachusetts, moved to California when I was nine. Lived here 30 years then moved back and forth for the next 22 years and I'm ready to leave again. It feels familiar, but isn't my home. I've moved around so much no place is home, so I'm just looking for a more affordable place to live in retirement. Still a Bostonian at heart and have never grown used to the nice to your face talk behind your back California thing.

As a former "New Yawker", I hear 'ya Isabella, although naturally wherever you are, the ''locals'' are always gonna have their reasons why it's perfectly ''normal'' (like the thread here re: the ''friendliest'' parts of CA, and the several convoluted excuses from the ''unfriendlies''... LOL)!

But even having moved back and forth between the coasts over the years myself, I still much prefer the East Coast's ''directness'' to the West Coast's indirectness and ''cool''. IMO, it's just human nature to have ''emotions'', so that being more ''upfront'' about 'em (good or bad) just seems ''healthier'' somehow. Of course that also means that sometimes the East Coast seems to have just a teensy-weensy little more tendency towards ''drama'' too!

Fortunately for you this only happens within California's borders. So you are free to move about the cabin of the entire rest of the country and never fear duplicity. May I recommend Washington DC be added to your dream locations list?

We're speaking generally and yes, of course it's not confined to CA's borders, but surely we're not gonna ''pretend'' that there are no differences between say, the west coast ''temperament'' and the east coast one?! Unless those of us who've spent a pretty fair amount of time on both, are just ''imagining'' the differences?
