Lawns are terrible for the environment:

-They need lots of water, of which we don't have much to spare
-Most people burn gasoline to mow them, spewing pollution from a very dirty small motor
-They're useless
-They're ugly (okay, subjective)

Plant native vegetation instead, it'll be cheaper in the long run, more aesthetically pleasing, and provide habitat for wildlife.

Ummm..... what did you say? A what? An umbrella....what's that? Shhhh....don't tell a soul, including your kids, immediate family, etc, people will be lined up to fall over on your lawn.

Insofar as gardners, etc, most of them are illegal and don't want to call attention to themselves, anyways. Also, if its a cash only transaction, what proof do they even have they were ever in your employ? I used to worry about such, too, but let it go...just keep your umbrella open!

They just might, now that you've posted it publicly.

I mean I don't know, I agree, that's a damned dedicated scam artist if he is willing to cut off his toes.

I have 1/3 acre and it isnt that difficult to maintain. Have some grass and the rest drought tolerant shurbs and ground cover. And, in California you should limit the amount of thirsty grass you have,,Do a tiny
Patch at the front for curb appeal and a small spot at the back off the deck. Nice place to have mint juleps on a hot summer day.

So, get away from the computer, turn off Judge Judy and get some sun and have the satisfaction the gardener wont sue you for a cut toe. Heck, you can save $1200 a year!

And, yes even an Illegal can sue you...

Would be a better scam if he put the toe in a large franchise's cup of chili...

But seriously, if the lawn's too big to cut yourself, it's too big. But that can be relative:

That is why if your life is endangered, you supposed to shoot to kill.
