You're always in control of what you choose to make available in a commercial or internet setting. That's not true with gov't surveillance. See the difference?

USSR had no reason to fear uprising and re-revolution (except possibly in the first few years. It took 5 years for the Revolution to reach all the way to the Pacific Coast). That's not at all the way the regime thought. They were much more concerned with influence from the West. They had their comprehensive propaganda strategy so thoroughly applied internally, there was no chance of re-revolution. They were mainly concerned with defectors, and in the Stalin era, with infiltration and influence on private citizens from abroad. Anyone who might come to question the ideology, like various dissenters later in the 70's.
Yes Ruth ... but don't you see that what you are saying about not having to give anyone your information is true about the gov't data as well? The government is not originating the data ... the government is only using data already collected on you by private industry. It is Facebook and Google and Apple and Verizon data. And you can use proxies just as you say, to avoid it being associated directly back to you.

You are just as in control over what the government gets -- because what the government gets IS PRIVATE INDUSTRY DATA ... see?

The USSR did very much fear revolution ... western influence was a revolutionary threat ... more than any reason because of the appeals of our freedoms. That is the difference. You are comparing a democratic republic with a totalitarian regime, a tacit dictatorship.

We're talking apples and oranges. Some of us here are talking about gov't eavesdropping. Not collecting consumption patterns.

It's useful to compare a democratic republic w/a totalitarian regime, in order to see how some of the totalitarian bits are sneaking into the democratic republic. Any gov't, no matter what its basis, can spy on its citizens. There was a time when the US public thought that would be impossible here.

Is the two-party system really all that different from the one-party system? Do you have a say on which candidate your party will choose at the caucus? Some friends of mine said those caucuses tend to be heavily orchestrated. Those who wanted Clinton on the ballot (2008) got shouted down by the local party bosses. Only one "choice" was allowed.

And yet another example of how silly it is that the public condemns and throws tantrums over the government having the same information that they (the people) are gleefully providing to private enterprise in enterprise's forced march of the sheep into 1984 and a Brave New World:

Right do what Nullgeo and others do, just visit CA, not live here (He has a neat little "Camper" he lives in part of the year). Enjoy, but don't pay for it or worry about what the Gov't does.Best of both worlds.

Pretty much -- but not quite. I have paid plenty in the past ... I still pay my way as I go with sales taxes and personal property taxes and some other fees ... I just don't own real estate in CA at this time ... but I do in Washington and I pay substantial tax rates there (property taxes are higher in WA than CA).

As for worrying about what government does -- not much ... government has always been a Chinese fire drill and I managed to survive for 65 years so what's to expect that it won't continue to muddle through?

Don't worry -- be happy It doesn't take much to get by and enjoy the finer things in life ... you all expect too much and miss what's here.

A Republican governator just had the state for 8 years. What more do you want?
