I know most cities in central valley are considered as rural areas since agriculture is kind of the industry here. Many also say that most areas have poor air quality, too hot in summer. I live in Delano but living here is kinda ok for me. Though very distant from major cities, at least traffic isn't much to worry. I also can bear with the high temperature during summers since I came from a tropical country.

What city can you consider the best place to live in central valley?

By Central Valley do you mean just the San Joaquin Valley? If using that definition and sticking to the larger communities (like over 100K population) I'd say Modesto. Lived for seven years just fifteen miles north of there in Oakdale and it was a very nice area - wonderful place to be a kid. I've also lived in Merced and Fresno and I prefer Stanislaus County. Now if you include both the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys in "Central Valley", I agree with ccm123 - Sacramento, no contest.

The poor air quality removes any central valley "city" from being an acceptable place to live. Sacramento is your best choice because of the rivers and breezes.

Does Davis count?

But yeah, I agree with other people, the delta and north of it is very nice country.

I didn't particularly mind Fresno, either... There's a certain vibe I get from valley towns - in quiet old residential areas where the trees have all grown up that I've always liked.

The real downside to the valley is the dismal economy, and all the problems that come with that. After Appalachia, the San Joaquin Valley is the poorest region in the U.S - in fact, it has been dubbed New Appalachia.

You could live on the edge of the central valley in Placerville, east of Sacramento. Wish I could convince my wife to move there, great locale!

Interesting to me that the North/Northeast side of almost any San Joaquin Valley city of any size is usually the "good" side of town. Think Bakersfield is the only one that's breaks the rule.

Just FYI - I believe the Sacramento Valley is included in the definition of "Central Valley".

I love Camanche Lake South Shore. It's always been one of my favorite fishin' holes...
