I work night shift and the apartment scheduled maintenance for the middle of the day. Working 12 hours a day sleep is valuable. I asked if the maintenance could be rescheduled for the following day due to the circumstance. They rescheduled the visit and placed a notice on my door stating that because I would not let them enter while I was asleep they would be charging me for the visit. Can my apartment place charge me for AC maintenance on a different day because I needed some sleep?

Would be better to ask in the Rental forum.

Generally, landlords are supposed to try to reasonably accommodate tenants' schedules when making appointments for maintenance. To me, your request seems reasonable, assuming you gave them sufficient notice to reschedule the appointment.

I recommend reading the CA landlord tenant laws to make sure you are familiar with tenants' and landlords' responsibilities.

If you called to reschedule more than 48 hours before the initial maintenance visit, I don't see how they can charge you.
I cannot tell from your post if you rescheduled first, and then the day of the original appointment came and they put the notice up, and then the next day would be the actual visit.
Either the reschedule did not make it to the maintenance crew in time and they were just following protocol. But you say thier note mentioned you being asleep, so that seems to say they did know. And with that, it sounds like they are trying to get some extra $ from you.
Also check your rental agreement. It should state that there would be a charge in these situations. If it does not, I would protest saying that you had not been informed that there could be such charges applied.
