The view from Nepenthe and Cafe Kevah next door is spectacular and the food is awesome too. The views south of Big Sur (southern coastal Monterey County) are even more spectacular than Big Sur itself so don't stop there if you are coming from the north but of course crossing the Bixby Bridge north of Big Sur is a must too if you are traveling from the south. There's plenty of pull-outs to stop and take in the view of the mountains falling into the ocean. I highly recommend stopping at Jade Cove and taking some of the trails down to the beach if you can. You can google map it... it's south of Big Sur.

You may consider visiting Point Lobos State Park. It's located on Hwy 1 just a mile or two north of Big Sur. Point Lobos provides many dramatic views of the central coast.

I think Point Lobos State Park may be a bit further north than that... basically part of Carmel. I agree it is "dramatic" but more landscaped than places south of Big Sur, some of which are so isolated, it makes you feel like you just discovered America :-)

I was curious and just checked... Point Lobos is about 22 miles north of Big Sur. If you do head up that way, then I'd suggest heading a little more north and checking out the tidepools at Pacific Grove and watching the sunset at Asilomar Beach. The dramatic cliffs disappear in this area and you're eye level with ocean but you're just inside the Monterey Bay so it's a bit more protected and you get different creatures living there than on the open coastline, plus it is safer to explore. You may see National Geographic photographers hanging out at Asilomar as they often do set up there. Then of course there's the Monterey Bay Aquarium not so far away (straddles the line between Pacific Grove and Monterey).

Any place in Big Sur is a place to stop. Julia Phiffer is the state park beach and is a very cool spot. Where to stay depends on your budget and type of accomidations you desire. You want a fancy motel room? A cabin? Or stay in a treehouse?
If alternative accomidations sounds neat, Post Ranch Inn or Treebones would be something to check out. Can always bring a tent and stay in the campground too.

Pretty much this. The place is the attraction, or something like that...

I third this! Just driving down the road in that area and pulling off on some of the pull-offs is loads of fun.
