Are there any small to mid-sized aquariums in CA worth mentioning?

Large being the San Francisco Aquarium, Aquarium of the Pacific, Monterey Bay, and Birchwood Aquarium.

Yes, there's one at Pier 39 in San Francisco. It's a fun destination as there is more to do at Pier 39 than just the aquarium.

Pier 39 aquarium is not worth it. Check out the Steinhart Aquarium.

Steinhart is a BIG aquarium though....think that is what the OP meant by San Francisco aquarium.

There is an aquarium of sorts in Crecent City. They have marine mammals, more of a tourist stop than an 'educational' stop. Even though it was small rinky dinky, I liked the up close and personal aspect.

While not small, the aquarium and shark tank at the park in Vallejo is pretty cool.
There is a shark there that uses to belong to some friends of mine. When they go to visit, she remembers them, will turn on her side and show her belly to them, as that was part of their feeding ritual.

Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. We went there several times when the kids were little, and they loved it.

How about Avila Beach Sea Life Center. It's south of the Monterey Bay on California's Central Coast.
It's more of an educational marine center. Ideal for young children. They have several big tanks of corals and fishes.

I wouldn't go out of my way to go there but if you are in the area, it's fun to pop in there.

So Six Flags in Vallejo has an aquarium/mini zoo then. I didn't know that. Nice to know.

Hardly an aquarium and they treat their seals poorly. Supposely there were/are some plans for several groups to purchase the facility and turn into a two story aquarium.
