LOL.... those were the exact things I was thinking about. Also, traffic and low pay but high cost of living. The beaches and weather are definitely not the same. <3

I would say most like Arizona. Both states are primarily semi-arid to arid but have some forested areas in their northern and highland regions, and a mix of WASPs and Hispanics.

Southern CA is definitely more like Arizona than anywhere else. The Phoenix area has been compared many times with Orange County, parts of the Inland Empire, and even San Diego, L.A., and San Fernando Valley. There are many similarities in the climate, culture, look, and overall vibe. One thing that is very different, however, is the cost of living. Southern CA has become overpriced, but Arizona is more affordable on most things.

Different parts of California resemble different states:

Cascades + Northern Coasts = Oregon or Washington

Central Valley = Texas

Sierras = Colorado

High Desert = Arizona, Nevada, or New Mexico

Southern Coast = no other comparison.

Yup I agree...California is like a mish-mash of other states rolled into one...I also can't figure any other state that's a twin to California

Who in the world voted for South Carolina? These two states could not be any more different.

Since it's now 2018, I said Colorado for the mountains, semi-arid nature, and politics.

Washington State, controlled by the very Liberal population-base, with pockets of very-red voters, mainly in the less affluent areas. That mirrors CA.

I have to pretty much agree with you. I would say Wa comes the closest because as well as being liberal they have a lot more high tech, just like parts of Ca. Politically as you say many of the truly liberal states like or and Wa. They are just mini Ca. The difference, as you say is probably the HCL but Wa is getting there. When I see states like NV and AZ on the list I just laugh to myself.
i hadn't realized how old this thread is or was; still the answer is the same. I do agree with what many have said about the state being many different regions with many different politics and cultural influences.
