If you've never visited somewhere, let alone lived there, you shouldn't be giving advice...like at all.

Here are some areas of California for your consideration:

1. Inland Empire (Riverside & San Bernardino Counties)
2. San Joaquin Valley (Stockton-Modesto-Merced-Madera-Fresno-Visalia-Hanford-Bakersfield)
3. Sacramento Metro
4. Sacramento Valley (Redding-Red Bluff-Chico-Oroville-Yuba City-Marysville)
5. North Coast aka "The Redwood Curtain" (Crescent City-Arcata-Eureka-Ukiah)
6. Imperial Valley (El Centro-Calexico-Brawley-Imperial)

A middle aged guy would never call California "Cali."

That's very young and hardly a qualifier for wisdom and experience. Distant relatives do not expertise on California make. The state is too diverse topographically, atmospherically and in terms of population to be pigeonholed. I strongly suggest you not give advice to people about California unless and until you've lived in the state for some time and traveled its length and width during all seasons.

That's gratuitous advice from a 69 year old, native Californian who lived in southern, central and northern California during my 50 years there and traveled extensively throughout it.

By the way, youngster, I've been away for six years now and no longer feel qualified to give advice on most CA subjects.

Ah, youth!

Back on topic, I also vote for Sacramento. It's reasonably affordable, has the buses and light rail and the restaurant industry is quite robust.

wow, glad to hear you are still with us; haven't seen you posting much lately. I so agree with you. I do still give some advise but like you, I have been gone to long to be the expert. I do get back every few years for a few days. That is about it. I talk to the family that still lives there weekly, but that isn't the same as experiencing it myself.

Still here, alive and kicking. Just didn't have much to say.

Agreed! My wife left the Ozarks and moved back to Sacramento about six weeks ago. She calls me often but whatever she says about Sacramento doesn't make me an expert on it by any means despite my 20 years there.
