Despite Southern California's large dense urban areas beaches are fairly suburban.

Potential locations for high rise beach community similar to Miami Beach and Waikiki

Ventura/Oxnard: There's a large patch of farm land east of the harbor and south of downtown

Ocean Park, Marina Del Rey:

Long Beach/Belmont Shores:

Huntington Beach

San Diego: Mission Bay/Mission Beach, Coronado Island if they sold the Naval Base.

Aside from the California Coastal Commission anti-development stance and since they would need to approve such things, the beach vibe in SoCal is much different than is Miami Beach or Waikiki and I don't think the residents would care for it. For one thing, the traffic is heavy enough as it is..

I Love Buildings!... But i'm gonna have to go with a no on this one. There's a reason we like to keep our beaches suburban. Our new skyscrapers stick inland towards Downtown LA.

It's just not the "California Way" and besides the California Coastal Commission would make it all but impossible for such development to occur.
