Hello all, I'm looking for information on behalf of my wife, who is currently a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) with a MSW here in Pennsylvania.

We are planning to move to California (San Diego) soon, and she is very worried about her prospects without an LCSW. PA's LSW credential does not exist in CA.

Can anyone attest to the social work job market at the MSW level? She has worked as a care manager and hospital social worker here in PA - are these jobs she can get without an LCSW in CA?

Thanks!

I am a recently retired SW in Eastern CA. Having an MSW and experience as a care manager in a hospital setting would make your wife nicely qualified for finding work in our fair state. I would not worry about it.

Having a clinical license only pertains to working with people who have mental health issues.

If your wife is interested in obtaining a CA license, she could get a job as a medical hospital or county (IHSS, APS or CWS/CPS) SW in the meantime.

San Diego is very different than rural CA...most social work positions require an LCSW...medical social work (any medical center, large or small) will always require it, as will social work in a licensed adoption agency, or any position in a private agency that provides family counseling, especially if it is court ordered. Home health agencies affiliated with Medicare require an LCSW. Southern California is a very professionally competitive area for those in the social work profession. Your wife may be able to find work with the county in IHSS, CPS or possibly APS, but they would be lower pay-grade grade positions with no avenue toward professional advancement. An LCSW is a necessity in SoCal for social workers. Once she finds work, she should contact the BBS for info. regarding requirements for licensing...but then, plan on staying in CA, as obtaining a license is a long & tedious process, & unlike most other professions, there is NO reciprocity in most states.

Additionally, being bilingual, (Spanish) is frequently a job requirement for social workers in San Diego.
