Weaverville, in the North.
Eagle Rock, near LA, still in LA County.
Bolinas, on the coast.
Most are way too expensive, but not Weaverville.

The coastal cities and towns between Monterey and Santa Barbara, take your pick. Maybe because Morro Bay is my hometown, it's tops with me. I drove through Weaverville once, maybe 15 years ago, I remember thinking "man I could live here". From what I remember, that was a nice town. Capt. Dan, I'm assuming you were a govt. employee from SLO county who retired to TN? maybe CMC. Anyway, how do you like it back there? I grew up in SLO county so I don't know any different, everyone who moves here says that they have found paradise. I agree. I've traveled around to U.S a bit and I began to realize how lucky I was to have grown up in Morro Bay, I mean heck, our high school is right on the beach!!!! It's hard to imagine leaving this place, but I'll probably end up retiring out of state. It's just too dang expensive here, and living in Shandon or California Valley isn't an option.

San Luis Obispo - I lived there one year and can't tell you guys enough about the town. It will be my destination if I don't go to Europe and decide to stay in Cali.

San Francisco - the history, the big city feel.

San Jose - great place, low crime, clean relative to its size.

Fresno also has a very good future.

San Luis Obispo may be the best place to live anywhere, period.

Okay, I have changed my top 2 cities again. Only cause I believe Nipomo will get a regional mall over Pismo Beach.

1)Nipomo (when it has a regional open-air mall and 50,000 population in 2025 or sooner)
2)Fresno (when at 500,000 population in 2010)

And in general my cities in these size ranges:

0-49,999 population "rural" (San Luis Obispo and Monterey)
50,0000-499,000 population "suburban" (Nipomo and Salinas)
500,000-999,999 "urban" (Fresno and San Francisco)
1 million-9million "metropolian" (San Jose and Los Angeles)

I would love to live in Nipomo or Fresno.

I dont think anyone considers Fresno as urban... I would have chosen Sacramento

Mine are:

Cities:

San Francisco (live here currently)
Sacramento (born and raised here)
San Diego ( not a big fan of SoCal but it will work and not as big as LA)

Towns:

Berkeley (great culture)
Davis
San Luis Obispo

La Jolla
Laguna Beach
Long Beach

But I too could easily list at least two dozen cities here. And I haven't yet been north of L.A. so I can't opine on cities there.
