We have relatives who retired in Santa Maria and really love it. They are half way between us and their SoCal family. The weather will be 100x more bearable than Vegas, guaranteed. And the area is more scenic as well along the central coast.

Yep, all of which are inland, aka desert.

You don't get cheap on the coast, until you get up around Crescent City, which would be a real PITA as far as driving to see your kids.

Any affordable areas, within driving distance, won't have coastal weather.
