Agreed about CA innovation. But didn't Al Gore invent the internet?

They would not have been able to innovate this in any other state?

Lol at thinking innovation is subjective.

Something is either innovative or it is not. California boasts an embarrassment of riches in this regard.

California also happens to have one of the more diverse economies in the country as well. Agriculture and entertainment are also pillars of this juggernaut engine. Perhaps one of the most highly regarded groups of universities in the world (especially in R&D) all residing here also has something to do with the incredible talent pool which perpetuates the innovation in these industries.

Tech companies won’t be able to attract top talent (typically younger and recently college educated) unless they are in a desirable area. This is why you see tech expansion out of Silicon Valley and Seattle to places like west LA (the silicon beach) and Portland, OR (the silicon forest). They all want to live in large, desirable and exciting cities. I just moved to Bakersfield. I think the area has a ****load of potential, but the Bay Area it is not. I feel like the most places like Bakersfield and Fresno can expect from the tech industries are the new state of the art distribution centers, possibly renewable energy as well, which is something.

Its kind of a chicken/egg proposition though. I think if there was a large HQ in Modesto it could attract a lot of workers. Its not a hellhole by any stretch and its only 90 minutes (in good traffic) from SF. A 400K home has a lot of appeal to a first time buyer vs. 1.2 million (at least). The longer such a facility is there the more support businesses and upscale retail/restaurants that will follow. Someone just needs to make the first move.

A big part of their success is the synergy between academia and industry. This is especially true with regards to launching companies from a bright student's garage and then getting venture capital backers. That's why the Bay Area is such a powerhouse with Stanford and Cal along with all of those 'startups' like Facebook, Apple, Google, eBay, etc...

Stanford is actually the top producer of startups in the world. That is something which cannot be easily replicated or exported to other places. https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/319475

They've been at this stuff a very long time and have something special there working with entrepreneurs. Same is true for Harvard and MIT.

CA is the most innovative economy in the world. By far - on a consistent basis.
