Ok, given that perspective do you see some states demonstrating innovation in other ways not reflected in Blommberg's report? What might those be? Could it be growing there at a scale which impacts the economy?

I wish one of those Bay Area tech giants would be brave enough to put either a headquarters or large district facility in the Central Valley to try to spread the wealth around and build up a part of the state that's as poor as the Deep South. Shouldn't be such a massive disparity in an hour and a half's drive.

Agreed, it would definitely help some of those places mentioned in the article. There are some good schools in some of those southern states which didn't fare so well overall. That's not saying they don't conduct research nor have good potential for growth. However, without as much industry support or presence top talent tends to leave upon graduation. Big companies will recruit to places like CA, NY, MA & WA.
Regarding the Central Valley, yes, it makes sense as more Bay Area folks move to places like Sacramento for greater affordability. Even more corporate branches in those locations would be helpful along with greater telecommute opportunities.
