A ballot measure that would overhaul the state’s tax-cutting Proposition 13 by charging companies in the state billions of dollars more in property taxes will go before voters in 2020.

The measure, which is backed by community groups, education advocates and unions, qualified for the November 2020 ballot on Tuesday when the secretary of state determined that the supporters had gathered more than the needed 585,407 valid signatures of registered voters. Proponents call it the first proposed change in commercial property taxes to qualify for the ballot since Prop. 13 passed in 1978.

Companies?

So like a company that owns a store? That will pass down the tax increase to their customers?

Or a company that owns multi-residency properties? That will pass down the increase in the form of higher rents?

Trust that this is a short beginning to a fast end. To be frank, I'm surprised that Prop 13 has lasted as long as it has with all the money grabbing governors we've had over the last few terms. I think greasy Gavin drools when he talks about it. Oh wait, he never talks about it, he acts on these laws that the voters voted on without ever showing his face. That makes it easier for him not to face the voters.

From the Prop 13/megatopic thread:

A change to Proposition 13 that homeowners can get behind:

I own commercial properties. If the RE taxes go up on them, guess what I'm going to do...

Yep. Pass those costs on to customers.

Not if your competitors decide to eat the cost increase and not charge customers more. You'll be forced to do the same or you'll go out of business.

You've got a degree in Business Administration, with a minor Economics, right?
