Yeah would be nice to see that on a per capital basis.

I did a quick table and CA comes in at #15 or mid pack but that's not per tax payer since a lot of people get money back. DC came in #1 by headcount from latest census. DC, Delaware then Minnesota of all states. Not sure why DC is in that table since it's a federal district.

But I'm just wasting some time at work so not time to validate.

California is a donor state, we pay more to Washington DC than we get back, especially after the SALT repeal.

I wish my income was high enough to pay 13 percent state taxes. That's a problem I wouldn't mind having.

absolute numbers mean nothing coz CA is also the most populated state so its just natural that CA pays the most.

the numbers should be converted into ratios/percentage like CA pays 20% of all federal taxes while it has only 13% of the population (my numbers are not correct, just an example)

I'd like to see a list of City-Data net positive tax payers in California for 2017 or 2018. I'd probably be in the Top 3-5% easily.

I'd be willing to bet $1,000 cash that half the people who think lists like this are somehow self explanatory don't appear in the upper 50th percentile.

As a former policy analyst for the Federal government I am ok with your numbers, however, they need to be adjusted for population.

Large population states will pay more in taxes. AND California being the largest state pays more than other states.

BUT California is very much a RICH/POOR state with the 1% generally paying less than their fair share in taxes. It is really the middle class that pays the bulk of the taxes.

So I ran a few numbers simply dividing the 2018 Federal collections by 2018 population.

Here are a few states that are higher than California.....

District of Columbia 40,491,187 per person
Massachusets 17,095, 899 per person
New Jersey 15,600,114
New York 14,390,409
Ohio 12,052,860
Washington 11,996,949
Maryland 12,008,045
Connecticut 14,317,599
Nebraska 13,120,163
Delaware 19,684,491
Rhode Island 13,927,936
Illinois 12,651,114
California 11,541,710

I didn't do ALL the states, but it appears that the pattern is the states with LOTS of Federal, State and Local employees tend to pay the highest Federal taxes. Which makes sense, since "wage slaves" have very few deductions and most government wages are higher than the private sector (full disclosure...in many cases this is due to governments hiring more educated and skilled employees than the private sector)......this can be a good or bad thing depending on your views.

I lived in California during the "golden years in the 1960's and 70's. It received MANY, MANY more dollars from the Federal government during the period of time than it paid in taxes.

The Federal spends money on defense, old people, and poor people. Really those are the bulk of Federal expenditures. California drove the military out of the state during the early 1990's, the bulk of the old people come from the middle class and California has been bleeding those for almost three decades now.

Outside of California, people don't hate the state. BUT we would like you to pay your fair share given how many wealthy people you have relative to the other states.
