I'm finishing up an EMT program, and am looking to move around Fall to escape family drama. Anywho, I know Fresno is affordable but I also hear that it's the 10th worst city for black people in the US. I'm politically Independent with slight left leaning and am an agnostic with an interest in Buddhism but I keep these things to myself pretty well and am not judgemental so I'm hoping I wouldn't dram much unwanted attention.

Thoughts?

I'm not black, so can't speak from that perspective, but I think your profile would not be a good fit for Fresno.

I haven't been there for years, but it was a sales territory for me, and it was God-Awful in many ways. Some of the people I called on were bigoted against Mong (sorry, if that is not the correct spelling) people from Vietnam who had (not sure of now) a big presence there.

It's a very conservative town, politically, and when I was there, just butt-ugly and boring.

It's a huge suburb . . . I don't think it would be fun at all

You didn't say where you are relocating from and what your geographic limits are, but there have got to be better places!

Look, I don’t like people being mistreated, but this notion that people were “bigoted against” the Hmong is questionable. What did they do? It’s a population of largely uneducated South East Asian immigrants most of whom are on government assistance and do not speak English.

Did the people who were bigoted against this group really do something against a member of that group or did you just overhear a conversation about the Hmong being undesirable?

You'll be fine. Fresno has a sizable Black population and I don't hear about any more problems with them than I do in any other city.

Now neighboring Clovis OTOH is another story. Although it's come a long way and much of it is new, shiny, modern, and pricey, it's still a very Redneck/"Good Ole Boy" town at heart. You *MAY* potentially run into some issues there with some long time residents.

This your country and it is a free country, you should be able to move anywhere you want.

Just my two cents.

I am not sure where you live now, but is it possible to go & spend a few days in Fresno, & see how you like it?

This white guy wouldn’t move to Fresno. Much better Valley choices to be had. Consider Turlock, Merced or Bakersfield.

By coincidence, I just read somewhere online that thousands of people have already left Fresno and Bakersfield looking for employment elsewhere due to a scarcity of jobs.
