Could the Ukraine Conflict cause a realignment on Immigration ?

"This new wave of immigration could have an impact on existing Ukrainian communities, including in California. According to census estimates, “there are roughly 112,000 or so folks of Ukrainian descent who live in California. You’ve got a cluster here in Los Angeles, and in San Diego, but also a good amount in Northern California, clustered in the Bay Area and Sacramento.” There could be a huge demographic impact on California as long as NIMBYs don’t hamper efforts as they did with Afghanistan refugees resettlement."

Ukrainian Immigrants in California

"Californians, along with the rest of the world, are watching in horror as the Russian invasion of Ukraine unfolds. And while this war may look quite distant, it has particular impact for thousands of residents in our state. California’s Ukrainian community is one of the largest in the country: the state is home to almost 60,000 immigrants from Ukraine, second highest in the country (after New York with 75,000), according to data from the American Community Survey from 2016 through 2020. About one in six Ukrainian immigrants in the US resides in California."

There was a Ukrainian colony in Ukiah a long time ago. They were farmers. Part of the film "The Russians Are Coming" was filmed there, and they used local Ukrainians to play the part of Russians. Some of them had relatives in the San Fran Sunset and Richmond Districts.

Times change.

Dude, you gotta slow down with posting links to your own blog in all of your CD posts "robert".

There will be absolutely no negative issue if/when any of the people fleeing Ukraine arrive here in Los Angeles. You know why? Because they look quite a bit different than the immigrants fleeing from South America. They look quite a bit different than the immigrants fleeing from the Middle East. I think everyone knows what I am getting at. THAT is why. Its extremely unfortunate because we should be open and willing to accept ALL people fleeing despair, death, and threats from violent criminals/terrorists in their countries. Not just those who are not "brown".

Their accents sound Russian, though, and some of us already were wary of Russians. I think their first names often sound like Russian first names, too. And unless they flock in heavily, the default with any Eastern European in LA or anywhere else in the USA I can think of is to assume Russian.

Which sounds extremely racist. Wary of an accent.

Almost all Russians are white. Russians have earned a bad reputation over the decades, not nice to say, but it's true. Some refugees from the Ukraine will be mistaken for Russians and subsequently face undeserved hostility.

If there is a decent-sized Ukrainian community in a metro area, one great thing is that some excellent bread will likely be available. Ukraine is famous as the bread basket of Europe with vast fields of wheat, rye and other grains. Naturally, those grains are used to bake bread, and some of the finest bread is Ukrainian rye and dark rye.

When I lived in Orange County from 2000-2017, I often shopped at the Mission Ranch Market in Mission Viejo, an Iranian-American store featuring excellent fresh produce and a huge selection of bread, bulk grains, and a whole lot more. They also sold Ukrainian rye bread from a bakery in Los Angeles - and it was (and still is) excellent stuff.
