Energy shortage my butt- we have a president that is being lead by a finger up his nose by the far left to shut down producers and you see it everywhere.

You people should be pissed off at biden and calling your senators and congress reps and bitching them out.

We are actually in Bakersfield even though our gas supplier is still SoCalGas. So our winter temps are lower than the LA Orange County area. Our usage is actually down year over year as well. So the rates just went way up.

That still seems way too high for Bakersfield, which is rarely below freezing.

We paid $0.55 per Therm in January, whereas it looks like SoCalGas was charging $3.44 per Therm (https://www.socalgas.com/for-your-bu...ces/gas-prices).

By my calculations, if we were charged the same rates in Idaho our January bill would have been over $600 instead of $140! I don't understand why your utility is paying 6x the price to procure gas.

It's California that decided to limit storage in state. They could easily allow more storage at Aliso canyon to solve this

Yeah there's not a shortage, it was self inflicted. In the east there's actually multi year low natural gas prices

Sort of. The bigger problem is pipeline capacity. Most of the natural gas used in California comes out of Bakersfield. We have been cutting back on this production because of global warming concerns which was self inflicted error. But that would not be so bad if we had better pipeline capacity to the rest of the country. Natural gas prices are much cheaper in Texas and the Gulf because they have great pipeline capacity. While there is cheaper natural gas out there, it is expensive to get it to California. If we can't pipeline it in, we can import it by ship, but natural gas prices are so high in Europe right now, that the ships would rather sell it in Europe than California, so it is tough to get ships to bring it into California. That is why prices are so much higher in California than Texas and the Gulf.

The more rain we get, the more hydro the state can produce and that hydro can substitute for some of the natural gas, less demand for peaker plants. Some industrial users can switch back and forth between gas and electricity based on what is cheaper too. Lastly with portable eletric room heaters, some residential demand might be able to shift to to eletricity if that is cheaper than gas for heating where these people live.

What are the chances of building new pipelines from Texas?

Or, gasp, allowing fracking in California
