Hey,

We will most likely be moving to Arroyo Grande in the next 6 mo - 1 year. My wife's family is in the area and we really like it there so we are seriously considering relocating to the area.

I am a software engineer with 8+ years of experience. My only concern about moving to the area is that if there isn't any decent development companies to work for that my career won't be fulfilling. I am not a hard core career first kinda guy; my family always comes first. However, I like to excel in my career and I want to be able to continue developing my software engineering skills and career.

Are there any companies within a commutable distance that have decent software jobs?

Thanks!

Schnieds

As far as I can tell, there is very little. I have wanted to move there forever. You might find something working for the county or a power plant / prison etc. There are a few boutique web shops. Not sure if Oddworld Inhabitants still exists but they were in SLO.

Overall I'd say it's not viable for development work.

SLO major employers:
Cal Poly State University
Cuesta College
Atascadero State (mental, criminally insane) Hospital
Diablo Canyon (nuclear power plant)
a smattering of county jobs

The job situation is the most difficult part about living there.

Your best bet is to find a job where you can work virtual or be a consultant, then you can live anywhere you want. Unless of course you lose that virtual job, then you're screwed!

Nuclear power plant or the criminally insane... Hmm... tough choices LOL.

On a more serious note though I have also considered living there but... well there just aren't a lot of software oportunites in that area. However SRI looks pretty good. Also try an Indeed Search with an expanded radius.

Not sure if there were any in Santa Maria....

Bakersfield is hour and half away, I'm sure they have some there...

Starting your own business or the power plant is your best bet. Maybe the state hospital.

You might also try the state prison in SLO but, nobody ever seems to leave ...

They often joke that besides the inmates, the employees do 20 to life there also.

They don't leave because the pay and retirement are so good, much better than other State jobs. There was at one time a large IT employer in Santa Maria, but I can't recall who. I think the job situation is not too good in SLO except for "hospitality" -type jobs. I have a cousin in Cambria who was a Phi Beta Kappa from Berkeley and she's working the front desk at a B&B. Telecommuting might be the way to go if you can swing it. Good luck!

It is a small tech community in the SLO area.

They do have a SLO tech organization that hosts monthly mixers and other events. That would be a good place to network.

The group is Softec. Their website is at Softec - Home

Softec has a jobs web page at Softec - Local Jobs

Vandenberg AF base has all the aerospace companies, about an hour away.
